Monaco Grand Prix winning Tyrrell coming to auction

The 1978 Monaco Grand Prix-winning Tyrrell-Cosworth 008 is estimated to make €1,100,000-1,400,000 when it is sold in the principality during Bonhams’s Les Grandes Marques à Monaco on 10 May.

It was driven to victory by Frenchman Patrick Depailler and was his first choice car that season after race 3 at Kyalami. In Monaco, he triumphed by 22 secs from Niki Lauda’s Brabham-Alfa Romeo and reeived a tumultuous reception from the partisan crowd and Prince Rainier and Princess Grace.

Depailler scored further World Championship points in 008/-3 in Austria, Great Britain and Canada.

Tyrrell sold the Maurice Phillippe-designed car on to the Melchester racing team for 1979 when it was driven by South African Desiré Wilson. Later in its life 008-3 was in Nick Mason’ collection. Just five 008s were built of which three survive.
